Joining Your Flight School
Summary
Get set up in FlightSense as a student pilot. Download the app, create your account, share your FlightSense ID with your school, and start accessing your training courses, debrief logs, and progress tracking. Most setup happens on your school's side—this guide walks you through what to do, what to expect, and where to find things once you're connected.
Who this is for
- Students joining a flight school that uses FlightSense
- Flight schools looking to share onboarding instructions with incoming students
Before you begin
- You need an iPhone or iPad with iOS 16 or later
- Your flight school must have an active FlightSense organization set up
- You'll need a way to share your FlightSense ID with your school (text, email, or in person)
Steps
1. Download the app
Download FlightSense from the App Store on your iPhone or iPad.
2. Create your account
Open the app and sign in using one of three options:
| Sign-in Method | How it Works |
|---|---|
| Apple | Tap "Sign in with Apple" and authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID |
| Tap "Sign in with Google" and complete Google authentication | |
| Tap "Sign in with Email," then fill in your first name, last name, email, and a password (minimum 8 characters with at least one letter and one number) |
3. Find your FlightSense ID
Your FlightSense ID is an 8-character code (letters and numbers, like "A1B2C3D4") that uniquely identifies your account. Your school needs this code to connect you to their organization.
To find it:
- Tap the menu icon in the top left
- Tap Account Settings
- Your FlightSense ID is displayed in its own section with a key icon
Note: Your name must be on your account before you can copy your FlightSense ID. If the ID appears blurred with an "Add name to unlock" warning, go to your User Profile and add your first and last name.
4. Wait for your school to add you
Once your school has your FlightSense ID, they'll complete several steps on their end. You won't receive push notifications for any of these—the changes appear in your app the next time it refreshes (on app launch or when you open Account Settings).
Here's what your school does and what changes for you:
Step 1: They add you to the organization
Your Account Settings will update to show your school's name under "Organization" (previously "No organization assigned"). This unlocks course-related features in the app.
Step 2: They add you to an instructor's roster
No visible change in your main views, but when you record a debrief, you'll now see your instructor(s) listed in the instructor selection dialog. This lets you link your training logs to your instructor.
Step 3: They enroll you in a course
Your courses appear under Log > Courses in the toolbar menu. Course progress tracking becomes available under Log > Course Progress, showing your stages, lessons, and completion percentage.
5. Explore the app
Once connected, the app has two main tabs:
Chat—Your AI assistant, Amelia. Ask questions about FAA regulations, review concepts, or get help with training topics. You can attach log context to your conversations for more specific answers.
Log—Your training hub. The main view shows your debrief log cards in a scrollable list. The toolbar menu gives you access to:
| Menu Item | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| Log Debrief | Record a new voice debrief after a flight |
| ACS Checklist | Your progress on Airman Certification Standards tasks |
| Training Insights | Performance trends and analytics |
| Course Progress | Stage-by-stage completion with lesson status |
| Check Results | Stage check and progress check grades |
| Endorsements | Your endorsement history |
| Courses | Your enrolled courses and lesson content |
What happens next
Your day-to-day experience in FlightSense follows this cycle:
- You fly with your instructor
- One of you records a voice debrief in the app (tap Log Debrief, select your instructor, and talk through the flight)
- Your instructor links the debrief to a course lesson, grades your content items, and adds time and activity data
- You review the debrief log—tap any flight card in the Log tab to see the transcript, lesson grades, ACS task feedback, and instructor notes
- Check your course progress periodically to see how you're advancing through stages
Common issues
| Problem | Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| FlightSense ID appears blurred | Name not set on your account | Go to Menu > User Profile and add your first and last name. |
| Account Settings still shows "No organization assigned" | School hasn't added you yet, or app hasn't refreshed | Ask your school to confirm they've added your FlightSense ID. Close and reopen the app to trigger a refresh. |
| Course Progress says "You must be affiliated with an organization" | Not connected to a school yet | Share your FlightSense ID with your school and wait for them to add you. |
| Course Progress says "No Course Progress Available" | Connected to school but not enrolled in a course | Ask your school to enroll you in a course. Enrollment is done by admins in the Admin Portal. |
| Course Progress says "No ACS Standard Selected" | Your profile is missing an ACS standard selection | Tap the "Go to User Profile" button and select the ACS standard that matches your training (e.g., Private Pilot Airplane). |
| No instructors appear when logging a debrief | Not added to an instructor's roster yet | Ask your school to have your instructor add you to their roster. You can still log debriefs without selecting an instructor—just tap "Skip." |
| "No Logs Available" on the Log tab | You haven't recorded any debriefs yet | Tap Log Debrief from the toolbar menu to record your first debrief after a flight. |
How this works
Why FlightSense ID instead of email?
FlightSense uses a unique 8-character ID instead of email addresses to connect students to schools. This approach protects your privacy—your school doesn't need your personal email to add you—and makes your training record portable. If you transfer to a different school, your debrief history, grades, and progress follow your FlightSense ID.
What your school can and can't see
Once connected to a school, your instructors and admins can view your debrief logs, grades, course progress, and training insights. They cannot access your Amelia chat conversations, your personal account settings, or any training data from before you were connected to their organization. Your training data belongs to you—the school sees it through a shared lens, not by owning it.
Premium features and your subscription
When your school adds you as a member occupying a paid seat, you gain access to all premium features at no personal cost—your school's subscription covers it. If you're a guest member (not on a paid seat), you'll have the free tier experience with limited AI chat messages and some features behind a paywall. Ask your school whether they've assigned you a paid seat if you're unsure.
