What causes lift?

Lift is the aerodynamic force produced when a wing moves through the air at an angle of attack and turns the airflow downward. The equal-and-opposite reaction is an upward force on the wing.

Two connected ways describe what is happening:

  • Newton's third law: the airfoil redirects air downward (downwash); the air pushes the airfoil upward.
  • Pressure distribution / Bernoulli: airflow produces lower pressure over the upper surface and higher pressure beneath it. That pressure difference contributes to the upward aerodynamic force.
